You?re not going to make everybody happy all the time. You?re not pizza. ?Mark Schaefer
A while back I wrote an article titled ?How Large Is Your Homeschooling Audience??
In it I talk about how many homeschoolers there are in the country (United States) and point out how these students and their families are your audience.
While there are millions of kids out there being educated at home, you can?t be everything to all of them.
You?re not pizza.
I wrote that article to demonstrate how many opportunities exist for you to connect with home educators who need exactly what you have to offer.
Just as you wouldn?t offer pineapple on a pizza to someone who considers that an abomination to the entire pizza eating world, you don?t want to offer a product or service to the wrong group of home educators.
When you can narrow your target audience, you can spend more time crafting quality content that answers their questions and solves their problems. They get exactly what they need to improve their homeschool experience, and you become a trusted authority in that niche.
There are many ways you can find out which part of this broad homeschooling group is your niche target audience and what problems they are trying to solve. Here are three you can access for free.
1. Poll your subscribers or email list. Your current list of homeschoolers can be a wealth of information. Send out a quick questionnaire asking them why they picked your company out of any others who offer something similar.
From this information you can craft a unique angle on your content marketing that will target just those home educators best suited for your products or service.
2. Ask and answer questions in homeschool forums or social groups. Your niche audience likely has a targeted group. This is where you can find information and respond to discussions that relate directly to your business.
From this information you can find suggestions that will help you create, improve, or eliminate products or services to help you streamline your products page for the audience you want to reach.
3. Test on social media. Be aware of which of your social media posts gets the most attention and feedback. Interact with your social audience to get first-hand knowledge of why something sparked comments or lively discussion.
From this information you can learn what excites your target audience. This will help you produce more specific content that is just as likely to generate interest in your business.
These tactics will not only help you find your niche audience, they will put a laser focus on what they want. You will also end up eliminating segments of the homeschool population who are not interested in your products or services. And that?s okay. You can?t be the one pizza every home educator wants.
If you want to invest in audience research, you can join the Homeschool Trade Association to gain access to their detailed homeschool reports, included with your membership. (not an affiliate link.)
Got your perfect pizza combination ready?
Now that you know who your audience is and what problems you can solve for them, how do you deliver the goods?
Educate
Use your blog posts, podcasts, and videos to answer your target audience?s questions.
Create useful, relevant content that is helpful and presents your material as the authority on the subject.
After all, no one knows your product or service like you do.
Take that passion and knowledge and turn it into content that informs.
Entertain
Add in your personality.
Your content doesn?t have to be the same as all the other stuff out there. In fact, to be unique in the homeschooling world, you need to craft your content with your voice and your angle.
Generate entertaining posts, podcasts, and videos that add life to your website, channel, or email newsletter and keep the attention of your perfectly targeted audience.
Sell
The reason you are in business is to sell your products or services to the homeschooling audience.
But this should not be the bulk of your content. In fact, less than a quarter of your content should be focused on selling.
Strive to build relationships with your target audience before you present them with an ?Add to Cart? button.
You?ve worked hard to gather a finely targeted group of home educators?don?t turn them off by focusing only on the sale.
Putting It All Together
Serving up the perfect combination of education, entertainment and sales to your target audience will give them the content experience they want. Your content can move your audience from awareness to contemplation to purchase as long as you follow the perfect recipe for relationship building.
I get it. You work hard every day to create the perfect workbook, lesson plans, curriculum, subscription box, or software for your audience in the homeschooling community. Add to that the task of creating, publishing, and promoting content, and that?s a sure recipe for burnout.
Let me take some of that stress off you and help you create a content experience for your audience. From newsletters to blog posts to landing pages and more, I can work with you to craft content that educates, entertains, and turns prospects into repeat customers.
